University of Edinburgh Boat Club retain the title of Scottish Boat Race Champions

The University of Edinburgh completed a clean sweep of victories on Saturday 25th May claiming their 7th successive Scottish Boat Race title. Despite the weather, the event, which took place along a 2km stretch of the Clyde, saw hundreds of supporters from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, line bridges along the river to cheer on their respective crews.

In one of the closest races of the day, the graduate 500m sprint, the Edinburgh crew narrowly secured victory at the finish line at the Glasgow Science Tower.

In the Second & Novice races, the Edinburgh crews led from the front and claimed decisive victories over the Glasgow crews.

The First VIII racing saw a similar outcome with the Edinburgh crews leading from the start and powering through to claim victory.

In the final race of the day, a thrilling mixed Ergometer challenge, Edinburgh eventually came out on top to complete a clean sweep of victories.

The Glasgow women’s 1st VIII  will feature Medical Student Niamh McClure who missed out on the 2018 race after a cycling accident. Niamh has also battled back from illness in the first half of this season to take up her position in the crew for the 2019 race:

“I am excited to be back in time to race this summer. Hoping that the boat race will offer an opportunity for racing that will be invaluable for the squad as we progress through the summer season. Both my cousins have won the boat race for Glasgow and Edinburgh, something that I hope to repeat myself.”

Portuguese National Champion and Mechanical Engineering Erasmus student Duarte Menezes will row in the men’s 1st VIII and is delighted to have the opportunity to compete in the historic event:

“As I fell in love with the place, club, and people around here, I’ve decided to stay for a full year instead so that I could compete during an entire season for GUBC”

University of Edinburgh Boat Club retain the title of Scottish Boat Race Champions

The event, the 3rd oldest boat race in the world, was held on the Clyde again this year, albeit with a slightly altered course, finishing at the Glasgow Science Museum. In the six individual races that featured this year, Edinburgh came out on top in 5, with Glasgow victorious in the 500m “Sprint” Alumni race.

In the student boats, the Edinburgh Novice women’s crew followed on from their BUCS success with an emphatic victory, further demonstrating the progress being made under coaches Matt Evans and Meghan Hunter. The success in the Novice race was followed by triumphs for both the Edinburgh men’s and women’s 2nd VIII’s.

In the first showpiece event, the women’s 1st VIII race, the Edinburgh crew led by GB international Maddie Artlett, rowed to a convincing victory.

Finally, in one of the closest races of the day, Edinburgh, featuring Josh Armstrong and Matt Curtis fresh from their success in the GB trials rowed to victory in the men’s 1st VIII.
