ABOUT THE CLUB
Edinburgh University Boat Club is a high performance rowing team based at the University of Edinburgh. The club caters to athletes of all levels, from beginners and recreational rowers to elite athletes achieving Scottish, European and world success. The club has four full-time rowing coaches and access to some of the best training facilities in the country. Club members have access to the University’s world-class gym facilities, with senior athletes training on the water at the club’s main boathouse at Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell (near Glasgow), while the novice and recreational squads learn and train on the Union Canal in Edinburgh.
THE HISTORY
Established in 1867, EUBC is one of the most successful university boat clubs in the UK. The introduction of the Rowing Performance Sport Programme in 2010 has allowed the club to flourish and since then our athletes have gone to compete (and medal) in the Olympic Games, Senior and U23 World Championships, as well as also fielding the first Scottish university crew to win at Henley Royal Regatta. In 2015 the club was recognised as a British Rowing High Performance Centre.
NOTABLE ALUMNI
Dame Katherine Grainger DBE
Britain’s most decorated female Olympic athlete and the first British woman to win medals at five successive games, Katherine took up rowing whilst studying law at Edinburgh. During her time in Edinburgh she was awarded the Eva Bailey Trophy as the most outstanding female athlete in 1996 and again in 1997 and has gone onto win Olympic silver at Rio 2016, gold at London, and silver from Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004, and Beijing in 2008, as well as six world championships titles.
Polly Swann
Medical student Polly Swann became an Olympic silver medallist in 2016 at Rio when she was a member of the first ever British women’s eight boat to win an Olympic medal.
